Jan 2024 Meeting Minutes

Meeting Minutes:    January 27, 2024

On January 27, Prez Jon cranked up the first MREC meeting of the year. to 28 folks present.

Treasurer, and part-time TV personality Steve briefed the financials as $3253.57, including $100 dues posted, expenses were to Rich Haller for BBQ supplies, and Shep Brown, for playing Donut-Man November through January. Steve emphasized dues were coming in nicely, at the meeting, and online. Steve also reminded folks about the MOA first-year free program via the QR code, or see Shep, and the many other MOA membership perks. Shep also brought up the new Champ-U program that is FREE for MOA members, and the continuing 10% discount program.

Prez Jon then asked a visitor, and friend of Joe and Fred to introduce himself. Michael Townsend thanked the Club for a warm welcome, adding that he was mildly impressed by how the meeting was going ! Michael is the CMA Regional VP, adding that they meet at the VFW on the 1st Saturday of each month.

Jon handed over the floor to Shep (me) as the Mileage Coordinator to announce  the 2023 participants and 1st,2nd, and 3rd highest participants. Shep assured that this was a fun event, even the Anchor Man who gets to possess the Honorable Rubber Chicken. The Club had loads of fun while Shep read the proclamations to Stan Grossman (#2), and Steve Kelly (#1). Our #3 participant was IPP,  and Amby Reece Mullins, who was absent due to sickness. A special moment was the passing of the Rubber Chicken from Joe Madsen to VP Jim Madsen, who banged out 1116 smiles on his K16 GTL!! The 10 participants rode a total of 109,270 miles in 2023. Shep again emphasized this was a Club fun event, promoting riding time, and Club camaraderie. It is NOT to late to star; send Shep a pic of your odo, if you are not a current participant.

Jon shared great story from his FROTY (first ride of the year), up around the Munson Ranger Staion, in Conecah County. Not to be out-done….VP Jim briefed the LROTY (last ride of the year), about 23 riders, MREC and “My Fathers’ Vineyard” riders.Beautiful day, lots of riders and stories.

Jon continued the meeting with a rather humble discussion of his recent “encounter” with a closed gate, due  GPS/TFT/Phone distractions while riding. He preached it’s real, and gonna get us if we’re not very aware of surroundings, and SA (situational awareness). Shep thru in a comment, that for highway riders, you’re actually going about 100 feet per second, leaving precious time for “look-down” time in some situations. Contuing on  a safety theme Jon initiated an excellent discussion on TPMS: tire monitoring: recommending the FOBO 2 system!!

VP Jim reminded  the Club that a spring event was going to be planned for the Club; probably a Club sponsored cookout for members and families; venue still TBD, but the Board is working on it.

Treasurer Steve suggested a donation to the MOAF of $1000, to be discussed in next month’s meeting.

Secretary guy Shep made mention of the new Blue Angel motorcycle tag tha t is now available, notably due to the work of our own Marty Martin, who’s an Executive Director at the Museum Foundation, the tag’s sponsor. It is only the second special moto tag ever made available !!

Staying on a safety thread, Chris Folz had great info on neck braces, as discussed recently in the MOA article. The discussion led to inflatable vests: Helite, Dainese, Alpinestars; tethered and un-thethered. Lots of great great discussion  on the new technology in vests, and similar jackets, offering get-off safety.

Jon politely shut us down at 10:32….prepping for a short ride for those interested .

Respectfully Submitted, Shep Brown, Secretary
